During the parade, the man and his crew may light fireworks, hit gongs, and carry lanterns and banners to ward off evil spirits and welcome their new wedding. The groom and his entourage are typically denied a view of the bridal home until they turn in enough crimson envelopes, or hong bao, to fulfill their hosts when they arrive at the bride’s home.
